Amazon is the world's most visited webshop

Over 282 million people visited one of Amazon’s websites in June, making it the most visited e-commerce site in the world according to a comScore survey. In a similar survey (by the same company) about the Belgian market, Amazon ended second to Fnac. 

1 in 5 internet users visits Amazon

The survey measured a worldwide audience of 1.383 billion people aged 15 years or older accessing the Internet from a home or work location, excluding visits from internet cafés or access from mobile phones or PDAs. 20.4% of this audience visited Amazon.com or one of its local sites – way better than number two eBay with 16.2% (223.5 million visitors). Alibaba.com, owners of Asia’s largest auction site Taobao, seduced 156.8 million visitors and ended third on the worldwide ranking. Apple (134.3 million) is the only one of the “big four” to miss the podium – the gap with number five, Japan’s Rakuten, is huge (57.8 million).  

 

The world’s largest offline retailer, Walmart, ends sixth in the online ranking with 44.7 million visitors. Hewlett Packard and MercadoLibre might be less expected names in the list with 38.5 and 33.5 million visitors – the latter almost uniquely attracts visitors from Latin-America. The bronze and gold medal from Belgian reach a ninth and tenth spot worldwide, respectively: German Otto Group (3Suisses) and French group PPR (Fnac) both reached almost 32 million visitors in June.

“While retail e-commerce has already grown to become a $150+ billion annual industry in the U.S., it still presents enormous upside opportunity across much of the globe,” said Gian Fulgoni, comScore co-founder and chairman. “Technology has changed the way consumers behave, and increasingly they are opting for the convenience and pricing advantages offered by the online channel. Several global retail brands have already capitalized on this global consumer trend, and many other retailers are sure to pursue their share of the pie.”
