Amazon now launched in Belgium

Amazon‘s Belgian website is online. Using the somewhat cumbersome url Amazon.com.be, Belgians can now order and become Prime members. The e-commerce giant plans to expand its Belgian offering in the near future.

“Brands of Belgium”

Amazon now has its own Belgian website. On Amazon.com.be, the e-commerce giant promises that Belgians will be able to choose from more than 180 million products in over 30 categories. They can also become Amazon Prime members, which gives them access to Amazon’s video streaming service and Prime Gaming. For members, Amazon also promises free next-day delivery.

Just in time for the holidays, says Eva Faict, Country Manager for Amazon.com.be. The online shop is available in Dutch, French and English, but also highlights local businesses with a specific “virtual shop window” for Belgian brands. The “Brands of Belgium” shop currently features about 100 Belgian companies, but more are expected. “Building strong relationships with Belgian brands – big or small – is incredibly important to us, as we know that our customers like to shop locally,” said Faict.

The launch in Belgium was announced a while back, but it took quite some time. For example, Amazon could not claim the Amazon.be website because the insurer Baloise already owned that url. In addition, Amazon first opened its own fulfilment centre in Antwerp and set up its own independent courier network. Faict: “This is just the beginning of our journey in Belgium and we are determined to offer our Belgian customers and local business partners the best possible experience.”

The digital gold rush is over: shoppers force retail back to basics

E-commerce has stopped being retail’s automatic growth engine. Online spending is sliding back towards parity with stores, while cash-strapped shoppers are choosing price, availability and convenience over digital gimmicks. AI may become the next gatekeeper to the customer, but consumers still do not trust it enough to let it take...
