McCain Foods is buying Scelta Products, a producer of frozen vegetable snacks from the Netherlands. The frozen fries specialist is jumping on the plant-based bandwagon.

New European department

Vegetable snacks and bites are a fast-growing area for McCain. The Canadian manufacturer of frozen snacks and potato products is therefore acquiring Scelta Products, a producer of vegetable snacks such as onion rings and battered mushrooms. The investment is significant, according to McCain, although the purchase price has not yet been disclosed.

“There are many opportunities for growth in the production of snacks and frozen snacks in Europe, the UK and the global market. The capacity constraints that Europe is currently facing are holding back our growth potential. With the acquisition of Scelta Products, we can free ourselves from these constraints,” said Erwin Pardon, regional manager for Europe, Middle East and North Africa at McCain Foods.

Later next year, Scelta Products will change its name to McCain. Scelta’s production facilities in Zeeland will also be integrated into the McCain production network. McCain will moreover set up a new European business unit dedicated to snacks. This business unit will serve the Benelux market under the brands of the regional subsidiary Van Geloven, elsewhere the products will be known as McCain.
