Amazon sold 100,000 articles per minute on Prime Day

Amazon has sold a record number of 300 million products during this week’s Prime Day – roughly 100,000 items per minute crossed the digital counter. The tech giant does not comment on turnover.

Support for small businesses

Amazon Prime Day 2022 was the biggest in the history of the bargain event, Amazon said as the discount campaign on Tuesday and Wednesday ended. More than 300 million items were sold worldwide, which amounts to 100,000 items per minute. All in all, shoppers are said to have “earned” 1.7 billion dollars in discounts, about five dollars per purchase.

Consumers ordered mainly from external sales partners on the marketplace: their sales growth exceeded that of Amazon’s own sales, the company reported. Three weeks in advance, Amazon had launched a campaign for small businesses on its platform: named Support Small Businesses to Win Big, Amazon organised a kind of raffle with which shoppers could win prizes if they ordered from small businesses. Customers spent three billion dollars during the three-week period.

Some of the best-selling categories worldwide were consumer electronics (whether Amazon products or not) and home furnishings. Shopping was mainly done in the evening, but for the first time also via “live commerce”: the live streams of thousands of influencers via Amazon Live achieved more than 100 million views, according to the e-commerce giant.
