Albert Heijn to double vegan assortment

Food13 October, 2020

Albert Heijn will be expanding its range of vegetarian and vegan products significantly this autumn. The Dutch supermarket chain is thus responding to the increasing demand for plant-based products.

70 new products

Albert Heijn says it already has the largest choice in vegetarian and vegan. Nevertheless, this autumn the retailer will expand the range with 70 own-brand products, for all eating moments of the day. These include vegetable slices of ‘cheese’ and ‘grated cheese’, vegetable spreads, vegan meats such as grilled sausage, roast chicken breast and vegan frikandells, boneless wings, various burgers and vegetable dairy products.

The reason for the expansion of the offer is obvious. The demand for vegetarian and plant-based foods has been increasing for several years now. And the end of this trend is not in sight: more and more consumers are now flexitarians and are opting more often for plant-based alternatives.

“Our mission is to make better food accessible to everyone. For a while, meat had the leading role on our plates and that has changed in recent years. This is good news because eating meat has a greater impact on the environment and on your health than people think. If we eat vegetarian and plant-based food more often, we can together reduce CO2 emissions considerably. That is better for the animals and healthier for ourselves. We at Albert Heijn find it very important to make our contribution,” says Anita Scholte Op Reimer, director Quality & Sustainability at Albert Heijn.
