19 multinationals launch campaign for biodiversity

At the UN Climate Change Summit, nineteen FMCG multinationals have announced a coalition to protect the planet’s biodiversity. The companies, ranging from Danone to Kering, intend to work on regenerative agriculture and the fight against deforestation.

 

Protecting biodiversity

One multinational after another is launching good climate plans at the United Nations Climate Change Summit. The latest announcement is the coalition of a whole series of FMCG producers and other leading companies, setting up the ‘One Planet Business for Biodiversity’ (OP2B), with the aim of restoring and protecting biodiversity.

 

Among the nineteen companies that are joining, are big names as Google, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, L’Oréal and Nestlé. In total, these multinationals sell products in more than 120 countries, and have a combined turnover of around USD 500 billion.

 

From soil protection to deforestation 

The signatories intend to take biodiversity into account in their supply chains and product portfolios. The initiative therefore focuses on three areas: regenerative agriculture to protect soil health, products that promote the biodiversity of cultivated crops and strengthen food and farming systems, and combating deforestation and improving the management and restoration of valuable ecosystems.

 

Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider, who has proposed the coalition at the UN summit together with Danone CEO Emmanuel Faber, said that protecting and restoring biodiversity is essential for ensuring food production and food safety, both today and in the future.
