Why RetailDetail introduces a paywall

icon
General1 September, 2019

Until now, all articles on the RetailDetail websites have been free for everyone. This will change as of 2 September. With the introduction of a paywall, we want to live up to our quality guarantee more than ever before.

What will change?

From 2 September on, you will see that a number of articles on the RetailDetail websites are marked with a ‘Plus’ logo. These articles will no longer be free for everyone to read: they will be reserved for paying subscribers.

Why a paywall?

RetailDetail wants to remain able to bring quality content, but our journalists do not work for free. With an advertising market in freefall, publishers are looking for other sources of income. You will not find many online newspapers without a paywall anymore, and all the leading trade journals in our neighbouring countries have also taken the plunge. It is therefore a logical step and it provides us with the resources to publish even better information.

Which articles will be locked?

RetaiDetail is the most up-to-date and complete source of information for every retail professional in the Benelux. The websites receives more than 250,000 unique visitors every month. Short news items remain free of charge, but ‘Plus’-articles, that require more journalistic work, will be locked behind the paywall. Those include scoops, exclusive interviews, interpretation and analysis, longer reports and research. Articles from our print publications RetailDetail Magazine and RetailDetail Food will be locked as well.

How does RetailDetail’s paywall work?

When you click on a Plus article, you will be asked to create an account. This registration entitles you to five free Plus articles per month. If you want unlimited access to all Plus articles, you can take out a paid subscription.

Which subscription formulas can I choose from?

There are three formulas: Compact (online only), Super (online + print) and Hyper (online + print + 1 free ticket for a RetailDetail event). They are valid for an entire year. You can subscribe as a private individual or as a company. Companies can take out a discounted group subscription for their employees. More detailed information about the subscription formulas can be found here.

Why sustainability remains a priority in retail construction

Although political support for climate policy is under pressure, sustainability remains a decisive factor in store design. In the run-up to EuroShop 2026, manufacturers, designers, and retailers continue to focus on materials, CO₂ reduction, and reuse.
