Amazon is working on its own delivery services

American online retailer Amazon is less dependent on external parties’ delivery services nowadays as it has invested a lot over the years to build its own network in that regard.

Bavarian distribution done by itself

Amazon recently opened a new distribution center in Olching, near Munich (Germany). Ever since it opened its 6,000 sqm location, it took control of most of its Bavarian deliveries, without the help of package delivery services like Deutsche Post and Hermes, according to L’Echo.

Amazon currently denies it plans to halt the collaboration with its German partners however. “We have created a longstanding collaboration in Germany, based on trust and we will keep working closely with our German colleagues in the future”, an Amazon spokesperson told German paper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Lease for 20 Boeing 767’s

There are other indications that Amazon is planning to become a package delivery service itself. Apparently, it has already entered negotiations to lease at least 20 Boeing 767 airplanes, which would represent a 300,000 to 650,000 euro cost per plane every month.

In China, Amazon has registered itself as a company for sea-bound transport, giving Chinese suppliers easier access to the huge American market, while Amazon has also been recruiting specialists in the field of small and middle-sized package transport.
