Hema clashes with unions over holiday work: “you can’t buy your way out of the law”

Is Hema allowed to have its store staff in tourist areas work a full day in Belgium, even on holidays? According to the unions CNE and ACV Puls, the retailer is violating the law by doing so. Hema disputes this and points to an agreement with the largest union faction within the company.

Different interpretations of the law

According to the unions, the law does not allow employees in tourist areas to work in the afternoon on public holidays. They claim that the FPS Employment already issued a warning to Hema regarding this on May 1, 2026. However, Hema has a different interpretation. The retail chain confirms that it has consulted with the FPS Employment on the matter and explained its position.

With new customs duties, Europe aims to slow the rise of Temu, Shein, and AliExpress. But what if Brussels ends up achieving exactly the opposite? The fight against cheap Chinese packages threatens to result in even fiercer competition for European retailers.
