[In the picture] AI robot cooks in Rewe supermarket

Food30 October, 2025

In three pilot stores, German supermarket chain Rewe is testing an autonomous AI robot that prepares fresh meals on site. The technology is expected to improve food safety and reduce food waste.

“Unbeatable value for money”

The AI robot is already up and running in the first of three test stores. At the Rewe branch in Düsseldorf-Heerdt, customers can select a dish and pay for it at the digital ordering terminal. The robot then prepares the meal live and in full view of shoppers. Within minutes, the result is a freshly prepared dish of consistently high quality.

The robot is obviously an eye-catcher in the store, but according to the manufacturer, German technology company Circus Group, the impact is much greater: this project will radically change the food trade. “Our goal is to use innovative technologies to create a greatly improved offering: high-quality food with unbeatable value for money,” says Nikolas Bullwinkel, CEO and founder of Circus, in the press release.

Starting at 3.50 euros

The AI robots are advanced, autonomous systems that combine robotics, artificial intelligence, and food-safe hygiene technology. Intelligent sensors continuously monitor temperature, process parameters, and stock levels. The system also automatically documents compliance with HACCP standards for food safety and hygiene. AI-supported demand forecasts also optimize supply and significantly reduce food waste.

Shoppers will find a selection of internationally inspired dishes on the menu: from pasta, soups, and curries to desserts. The modular technology allows the menu to be flexibly adapted to the seasons and customer preferences. The freshly prepared dishes are available from 3.50 euros.
