Deliveroo to become express grocery deliverer for Carrefour

Food7 March, 2022

Deliveroo is introducing Deliveroo Hop, a super fast delivery service for groceries, to continental Europe: the service is first launched in Italy, in partnership with Carrefour.

Working more efficiently from dark stores

Deliveroo is entering the growing market of express delivery: after an initial launch in the United Kingdom last October, the meal delivery company is now rolling out its ultra-fast delivery service to Italy as well. Deliveroo Hop promises to deliver groceries within ten minutes from dark stores, stores that are not accessible to the public.

The first Hop locations were located in London, in an exclusive partnership with the British supermarket chain Morrisons. Deliveroo has been delivering online grocery orders for Morrisons from 320 of the chain’s stores since the start of the Covid pandemic in 2020. However, thanks to Hop’s dark stores at strategic locations, it should be possible to deliver even faster. Deliveroo Hop says it deliberately chooses dark stores because it will allow the courier to work more quickly, offer a wider range of products and keep more accurate stocks.

Starting off with Milan

The service is now also being launched in Italy, in collaboration with Carrefour, trade magazine ESM reports. Carrefour and Deliveroo have been working together for some time: the meal delivery company has been delivering a selection of groceries for the supermarket group at limited locations in Belgium, France and Italy.

In some parts of Milan, an order could now be delivered within ten minutes, thanks to dark stores stocking an assortment of around 2,000 products. Customers can choose from Carrefour private label products and national and international brands. Deliveroo will extend the service to Rome and other Italian cities in the future.
