Aldi ditches Deliveroo

iconFood24 January, 2022

German discounter Aldi has ended its partnership with Deliveroo for the home delivery of groceries in the United Kingdom. The chain sees a more profitable future for click & collect in its own stores.

Focus on click & collect

About a hundred of the 950 British Aldi stores have offered home deliveries via Deliveroo since the outbreak of the coronapandemic. Now the partnership is coming to an end, as the retail chain wishes to concentrate on its own click & collect service, Retail Gazette eports.

The retail chain does not say what the exact reason for the decision is, but it is certain that home delivery of food products is still much less profitable. “We have decided to end our trial with Deliveroo to focus on our click-and-collect service, which remains on offer at more than 200 of our stores nationwide”, Aldi said in a statement.

Last Thursday, Deliveroo reported that sales in the final quarter of 2021 were up 36 %. Compared to the annual growth rate of 67 %, however, there was a marked slowdown.
