Albert Heijn returns to Leuven in September

Albert Heijn has confirmed the opening date of its new supermarket in the centre of Leuven, signalling its return to the city after an eight-year absence.

Prime location

In 2017, Albert Heijn had to sell its Leuven store following Ahold‘s merger with Delhaize. The store was turned into a Lidl branch, and left the Dutch supermarket chain without a presence in the university city. Eventually, the retailer found a suitable property in a prime location: the Bondgenotenlaan.

For a long time, Albert Heijn remained discreet about the store opening, but with the completion of the works, the comeback is finally official. The store is set to open on 24 September, General Manager Raf van den Heuvel announced. Franchisee of the store is Pieter-Jan Vaes, who also operates three supermarkets near Antwerp.
