Albert Heijn to replace Delhaize in Lommel

Albert Heijn will open a supermarket in Lommel before the end of the year. The retailer will take over a location there that was operated by a Delhaize franchisee until February. This brings the retailer’s total number of store openings in Belgium this year to five.

On to 91 locations

In February, the Delhaize supermarket in Lommel stood vacant after the franchisee ceased operations. Rumors quickly began circulating that Albert Heijn would take over the property, and that has now been officially confirmed. The search for employees has begun, and renovations to the property are underway, with an eye toward an opening in the first half of December. Spokesperson Ann Maes confirmed this to newspaper Het Belang van Limburg.

With this opening, Albert Heijn will end the year with 91 stores in Belgium. Following openings in Wilrijk and Haacht earlier this year, additional stores will open this fall in Bilzen (on October 14), in Machelen (an XL store on the former Makro site, on October 28), and now also in Lommel.
