German competition watchdog gives green light for Ceconomy acquisition

German competition authority Bundeskartellamt allows JD.com to take over electronics retailer Ceconomy (MediaMarkt, Saturn), arguing the Chinese e-commerce player still barely reaches consumers in Europe.

“No overlap”

Chairman Andreas Mundt says JD.com still has limited operations in Germany, so the minimal overlap means the regulator therefore does not expect any competition problems. The Dutch competition watchdog also gave its approval earlier this week.
