Desktop computer sales have slumped once more in the third quarter, down 3.6 %. It is the third straight year of dwindling sales, according to research firm Gartner.

67 million computers

According to Gartner, 67 million computers were shipped in the third quarter (July – September), down from 69.5 million in last year’s third quarter. The American consumer is the main reason for the decline, as the local market shrank 10.3 %. The European drop was limited to 1.1 % to 19  million devices. Everywhere else, the situation remained level.

HP’s sales dropped 4.4 % to a 21.8 % market share, which means it is slightly ahead of Lenovo (21.4 %). In absolute numbers, the difference is 200,000 devices: 14.5 million for HP, 14.3 for Lenovo. Dell is third, but at quite a distance with 10.1 million computers (- 0.4 %), with a 15.2 % market share. Asus (4.8 million) and Apple (4.6 million) have lost 9 and 5.6 % in market share respectively.
