Aldi is going to sell refurbished iPhones in its Belgian stores from this weekend on. This follows a similar initiative in the United Kingdom last year.
Growing market
The market for second-hand smartphones is expanding quickly: especially for refurbished devices of the more expensive models, there is a lot of demand. Aldi is now also trying to profit from this: from Saturday the discounter will offer a refurbished iPhone SE second generation in its Belgian branches. “It is a one-time action”, a spokesperson for the supermarket chain did warn.
The brochure of the retailer (photo) clearly states that these are not new devices, as demanded by customer protection organisation Test Aankoop. There will also be an extra poster in the stores to keep customers well informed. Aldi ensures that the devices have been tested on 80 points and that they contain only original parts.
Aldi is not the first retailer to move into the quickly growing market for refurbished smartphones in Belgium: French specialist Hubside.Store previously announced that it was aiming for twenty store openings in Belgium this year. Moreover, the Belgian initiative is not a world first for Aldi either: it had already set up a test selling refurbished iPhones in its British web shop last December.
