Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Aldi are working on a contingency plan to ensure the food supply in the event of war, flooding, or prolonged power outages. The competing supermarket chains aim to keep at least one store operational in each region. They are looking to the government to cover the high costs.
Competition gives way to cooperation
What if the country loses power and supermarkets have to close their doors for days on end? That question is keeping the Dutch supermarket sector busy. According to the Financieele Dagblad, supermarket chains such as Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Aldi have been in talks for months with the industry organization Centraal Bureau Levensmiddelenhandel (CBL) and the Ministry of Agriculture about a network of emergency stores.
