Amazon has announced that it will invest more than 16 billion euros in its German operations by 2027. The investment is intended to further drive growth in cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), satellite internet, and media production.
Germany as a European springboard
The announcement was made during the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin. The investment package builds on the more than 100 billion euros that Amazon has already invested in Germany since 2010. A large portion of the investment—about 4.8 billion euros—will go toward expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Frankfurt. AWS plans to significantly scale up its capacity for AI applications to meet the rising demand for advanced cloud solutions.
But Amazon also plans to develop the Leo satellite network there, which is intended to provide broadband internet worldwide. Amazon is also opening a second research center for robotics and AI in Berlin. Furthermore, the company is focusing on new productions for Prime Video, thereby competing with streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+.
For Amazon, Germany serves as a gateway to the European market. In June 2024, the American tech giant had already announced a previous investment of 10 billion euros, of which 8.8 billion euros was earmarked for the expansion of AWS data centers in Germany. In addition to technological investments, the plan calls for the creation of approximately 3,000 jobs, primarily in logistics and distribution.
