Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder of easyJet, is launching easyShop.com, a new marketplace designed to compete with Amazon. As of now, the challenger is officially active in 21 European countries.
“Simplicity, competitive prices, and choice”
The entrepreneur who launched easyJet thirty years ago to challenge the established airlines now wants to bring that same challenger mentality to online shopping with easyShop.com: a new marketplace with a wide range of products that doesn’t hold its own inventory, doesn’t sell its own brands, and will never compete with its sales partners. The newcomer promises that retailers can sell in 21 markets through a single account, with automatic VAT calculation.
“Competition is good for consumers and good for businesses. No market benefits if everyone feels they can only shop in one place,” said Stelios Haji-Ioannou. “EasyShop combines the values the easy brand has always stood for—simplicity, competitive prices, and choice—with a marketplace model that helps retailers grow rather than competing with them. I am convinced that there is plenty of room for a fresh take on online shopping.”
EasyShop is powered and managed by OnCommerce, the marketplace technology company behind OnBuy and the soon-to-be-launched marketplace Comet. Following a phased rollout of the local sites, hundreds of retailers are already selling on easyShop. For consumers, easyShop says it brings together products from trusted retailers in one place, with competitive prices, free shipping on millions of products, rewards with every purchase, flexible payment options, and verified reviews.
