Omoda is taking over the nearly 300-year-old Mertens Schoenen and the adjacent Van Bommel store in the heart of Leuven. The historic buildings will reopen next year after a renovation as Omoda’s second brick-and-mortar boutique in Belgium, following Antwerp.
“A strong cultural fit”
After eight generations, the family-owned business Mertens Schoenen, in operation since 1728, is passing into Dutch hands. With the transfer to Omoda Brands effective July 1, 2027, this shoe heritage will remain anchored at its iconic location on Mechelsestraat, both companies stated in a press release. For customers in Leuven, the familiar service will remain unchanged. The entire store staff will stay on board and form the heart of the new boutique.
