Oxfam: “Secondhand items bought through Vinted generate five times more waste”

Not all forms of secondhand consumption are equally sustainable. According to a new report by Oxfam, platforms like Vinted generate a much larger carbon footprint than local thrift stores. The NGO also warns that commercial secondhand models may even fuel overconsumption.

“Not all secondhand is created equal”

According to calculations by the consulting firm RDC Environnement, every five kilograms of clothing sold through a thrift store results in approximately 0.6 kilograms of CO₂ emissions. For commercial secondhand stores, that figure rises to 2.9 kilograms, and for digital platforms such as Vinted, to 3.1 kilograms.
