Just as in Hasselt, the Carrefour hypermarket in Burcht (near Antwerp) will also give up part of its current retail space. Real estate developer Redevco plans to build seven additional retail properties on the site.
Space for new retailers
The Carrefour site on Pastoor Coplaan in Burcht is being redeveloped by owner Redevco into a full-fledged shopping complex with seven additional retail units. As part of this, some existing buildings will be (partially) demolished and the parking lot will be redesigned. This will entail significant changes for the current tenants.
The Carrefour hypermarket will move to the former Lunch Garden building and will be significantly smaller. Brico will also reduce its retail space. This will create room for newcomers Aldi, Action, Kruidvat, Jysk, Medi-Market, and Torfs, reports HLN. One retail unit will be filled at a later date. McDonald’s and Auto 5 will retain their locations. The work is expected to take two years.
This is not the first or only Carrefour location to undergo a makeover: in Hasselt, Redevco is planning a major redevelopment of the building on Herkenrodesingel. As part of this, the Carrefour hypermarket will be reduced by more than half, from over 11,000 to just over 4,500 m². Many Carrefour hypermarket locations (formerly Maxi GB stores) date back to the 1970s. They are outdated and often too large by today’s standards.
