Carrefour has acquired Argentinian regional chain Super A for an undisclosed sum. The stores will all become Carrefour Express stores before the end of this month.
Regional strengthening
Super A operates in the province of Mendoza, in western Argentina, and has has sixteen stores there. The chain has sixty employees, all of whom will join Carrefour.
CEO David Collas of Carrefour Argentina is pleased with the transaction: “With the purchase of these new stores, we are already doubling the number of openings planned for the whole year at Carrefour Express”, he told Distribución Actualidad. The French chain has an expansion plan in Argentina to the tune of 250 million euros in three years. With that, Carrefour plans to open about 100 stores.
It is surprising that Carrefour is still on the takeover path in Argentina: in recent years, rumours have been getting louder and louder that the chain wanted to leave Argentina. With sales of 3.83 billion last year, Argentina was only Carrefour’s sixth market worldwide, just behind Belgium and Italy (but ahead of Poland and Romania).
