Jumbo Boom

Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has opened its 38th Belgian store in Boom, marking the first of potentially seven new locations this year in the country.

Expansion plans

The store in Boom, the eleventh in the province of Antwerp, is 1,700 sqm in size and employs 35 staff members. It is managed by independent entrepreneur Mehmet Öztürk, who also operates the nearby store in Niel. The opening was initially planned for 2024, but was delayed due to construction setbacks.

Jumbo aims to open seven stores in Belgium this year: Managing Director Peter Isaac says that the necessary permits have been obtained, but that the exact timing will depend on construction progress. In May, a supermarket in Tienen is scheduled to open, with further openings planned for the autumn. Last year, Jumbo achieved a turnover of 397 million euros in Belgium and recorded a small profit for the first time. The retailer aims to grow by 20 to 25 % in Belgium this year.
