On Wednesday morning, Jumbo opened its 27th Belgian store in Sint-Truiden, in the province of Limburg. The Dutch supermarket chain opened ten new shops in Belgium this year.

Jumbo’s Sint-Truiden supermarket is its seventh in the Belgian province of Limburg, and means that the supermarket chain managed to open ten new shops in Belgium in 2022, lifting its total number to 27. Rival Albert Heijn opened nine Belgian shops this year and now has 74. Both chains are aiming for a hundred shops in total, but their expansion plans are being delayed by tricky permit procedures.
Jumbo’s new store measure 1,700 sqm and is located just outside the city centre. It has 50 employees and is operated by independent entrepreneurs Jean-Jacques Schols and Helena Giets. Sint-Truiden already had its fair share of supermarkets: Albert Heijn, Aldi, Carrefour, Colruyt, Delhaize and Lidl also operate there.
