Jumbo: former CFO Ton van Veen takes over as CEO

With Frits van Eerd stepping down as CEO of Jumbo, former CFO Ton van Veen is taking over the reins. Van Eerd is one of the suspects in an investigation into money laundering and VAT fraud.

Ton van Veen, who was Jumbo’s financial director until February of this year, is temporarily taking over as head of the supermarket chain’s management team, now that managing director Frits van Eerd has disappeared from the scene. Colette Cloosterman-van Eerd is also taking on more responsibility in the current crisis situation. The former CCO now becomes vice-chairman of the supervisory board (SB) and “acts as a liaison between the organisation, the SB and the family”.

Both were part of the management team until a reshuffle in February sent them to the supervisory board. In this role, they were no longer to deal with day-to-day operational tasks, but to focus on more strategic issues. Ironically, this was also the moment when Frits van Eerd was appointed managing director.

“Stable management”

“The recent developments concerning Frits do not leave us indifferent. Naturally, he receives full support and respect in the difficult decision to temporarily step down from the Jumbo board. We are convinced that Ton will form a strong and cohesive team with the Board of Directors and that he will lead our family business in a stable manner, especially in these times of social and economic challenges. We also very much appreciate Colette’s role as an important link between the organisation, the supervisory board and our family”, supervisory board chairman Karel van Eerd said.

Frits van Eerd is a suspect in an ongoing investigation into large-scale money laundering and VAT fraud in the Dutch world of motor sport. As a racing driver and investor, Van Eerd might be implicated on a personal level.
