Carrefour Belgium joins France in price cap

Food9 September, 2022

Following its counterparts in France, the Belgian branch of supermarket chain Carrefour is also freezing the prices of 100 products for 100 days. The retailer says to be “defending the purchasing power of its customers”.

Third stage in campaign

Carrefour Belgium has promised to keep the prices of 100 products the same during 100 days. Until just before Christmas, the prices remain frozen, regardless of inflation or cost increases. The campaign covers a wide range of products: some are fresh products, which traditionally are more volatile (such as bananas and bread), but the action also covers non-food products, such as plates, tissues… and a steam iron.

The action is the third part of a campaign that the chain started a fortnight ago. During the first week, Carrefour put the range of cheapest house brand SIMPL in the spotlight, last week the retailer did the same with a thousand products for less than a euro. Both times, however, prices were not lowered – the campaign was merely about better communicating the existing offer.

In the third stage, Carrefour Belgium does intervene in the pricing, following the example of the French branch that already froze the prices of hundred daily products at the end of August. The consumer is becoming more and more frugal in his buying behaviour, as CEO Alexandre Bompard noted.
