Stable results for Jumbo in a declining market

Food20 July, 2022

Dutch retailer Jumbo managed to keep its turnover and market share stable during the first half of the year. Nevertheless, the retailer is not dissatisfied: the market was decreasing. In Belgium, the chain will grow to 27 stores this year.

More franchised stores

In the first half of 2022, Royal Jumbo Food Group realised a turnover increase of 1.6 % to 5.46 billion euros. The turnover of the eponymous supermarket chain amounted to 5.41 billion euros, its market share remained stable at approximately 22 %. Nevertheless, the retailer is satisfied: with the elimination of most Covid-related restrictions, the market fell by 1.1 %, while Jumbo remained stable.

Jumbo now has 687 stores in the Netherlands, 32 were renovated in the past six months. In Belgium, the chain currently has 21 stores: four new ones opened so far this year. There are six more to come: at the end of this year Jumbo wants to have 27 Belgian supermarkets, including more franchised stores.

Alert to the costs

Jumbo’s online sales stagnated because more customers combined their visit to a physical store with online ordering in post-pandemic times. The retailer opens more regional delivery hubs and strengthens the strategic cooperation with Gorillas in the Netherlands. Restaurant chain La Place was able to grow again after the pandemic and achieved 51 million euro turnover.

“We are satisfied with the revenue development achieved so far, especially in light of the challenging market conditions”, said Managing Director Frits van Eerd said. “In the first weeks of 2022 we still had to deal with restrictive corona measures and then with the consequences of the situation in Ukraine. Nevertheless, we are sticking to our target of breaking through the 10 billion sales barrier this year. We also remain extra vigilant on costs and confidently focus on the strategic choices we made at the beginning of this year.”
