Delhaize wants to double its plant-based offer

Food5 July, 2022

By 2025, Delhaize wants to double its offering of plant-based meat and dairy substitutes, from about 400 to 800 products. “We expect a massive shift to plant-based food,” says the retailer.

Innovations expected

Today, Delhaize sells some 400 vegetable meat and dairy substitutes. That number should double by 2025. In its own words, the food retailer wants to start a revolution in the minds of its customers right now and expects a lot of innovations in the coming years.

“By increasing the range and making it more clearly visible in the stores, we want to make the step to that range more accessible, because we are well aware that there may still be some barriers. People are not always familiar with the taste and texture. Or wrongly think it is very expensive”, says spokesman Roel Dekelver.

Green Deal

In this way, Delhaize is also helping to support the Green Deal on the protein shift. “The Flemish Government wants consumers to obtain 60% of their proteins from vegetable products by 2030. We would like to contribute to this, and that is why we put plant-based high on our list of priorities,” says the retailer.

Thirty percent of Europeans already call themselves flexitarians: they want to prepare more plant-based meals and reduce their animal protein intake.
