Management changes at Carrefour

Laurent Gersdorff, Carrefour

Surprising management change at Carrefour: Geoffroy Gersdorff returns after two years from the headquarters in Massy and becomes general manager Belgium from Monday, 4 July. Laurent Vallée will become executive director Northern Europe.

Tough assignment

Geoffroy Gerdorff, who until now was Director Offre et Marchandise for the Carrefour group, will be appointed General Manager Belgium as from 4 July. The retailer states this in a press release.

Gersdorff has worked for Carrefour (then GB) since 1997 in a variety of positions, both in Belgium and at group level. Between 2011 and 2013, he was responsible for the private labels at international level and then returned to Belgium where he managed the hypermarkets, among other things. From 2018 to 2020, he was Secretary-General there.

Remarkably, he is the first Belgian to take charge of the company in the country: until now, that top position was reserved for French people. The task that awaits him is no small one: Carrefour has so far had the greatest difficulty in achieving a necessary turnaround in Belgium.

“Full confidence”

Geoffroy Gersdorff will report to Laurent Vallée, who will become executive director Northern Europe from Monday. Until now, François Melchior de Polignac combined both functions.

“I fully trust the experience of Laurent Vallée and his knowledge of Carrefour developed over the past five years to manage the Northern Europe zone. I am counting on Geoffroy Gersdorff who knows Carrefour Belgium and its various trades to carry out with energy and determination the essential recovery of our activities. I would like to thank François Melchior de Polignac for his commitment to serve our transformation in the various positions he has held and for the journey he has made within our group,” said CEO Alexandre Bompard.

Fewer new supermarkets in Belgium; more discount stores, cosmetics, and restaurants

Although supermarket expansion in Belgium is slowing down, the retail leasing market remains dynamic, with very active non-food discount chains, a few notable international newcomers, and growing foodservice concepts in the first half of the year.

Bavo Vanhalst (Dreambaby, Supra Bazar): “Together, we can achieve so much more, without all becoming the same”

Supra Bazar’s megastores have been a household name in West Flanders for decades, but the family-owned business now appears determined to make a name for itself beyond the province’s borders. Under the Vanhalst Retail Group umbrella, the retail company now also includes Dreambaby, Kabine, and Qiddo—and its ambitions don’t stop...
