HelloFresh silently retreats from Japan

Food23 December, 2022

Meal box provider HelloFresh is ending its activities in Japan, not even a year after its first expansion into Asia. In a few days’ time already, HelloFresh is closing the door on Japan due to being too loss-making.

“ROI far below 1”

HelloFresh launched in Japan in April 2022, after more than a year of preparation and search for employees. It was the first Asian market for the meal box provider, and was supposed to be a stepping stone for further expansion in the region. However, that plan now appears to have failed: early next year, HelloFresh is already leaving Japan, according to internal communications RetailDetail’s editors were able to view.

Founder Thomas Griesel admitted his failure in a letter to employees: given the pressure to be profitable these days and the long (and bumpy) road to ever get “reasonable results” there, the company is pulling the plug. It said it was still going to cost a princely sum to “scale up with an ROI well below 1.0” and make “unrealistic improvements in all metrics”. Retention in particular proved a problem, Griesel explained.

Not abiding laws

Even beforehand, HelloFesh knew that Japan was going to be one of the most difficult markets to conquer, but the CEO takes responsibility for not making fast enough progress. He calls the withdrawal one of the most difficult decisions in his company’s 11-year history.

Disgruntled employees complained that the Japanese team was only notified on 20 December that they would lose their jobs on 31 December, without respecting the legal 30-day notice period. In the letter, the CEO also stressed that there was no intention to notify the press in advance. The listed company clearly hoped to keep the termination quiet for as long as possible.
