The Russian government has agreed to Auchan's plans to take over the Real hypermarkets in Russia, if the French chain finds a solution for the store in Kotelniki, a region in Moscow where they would otherwise get a market share of over 25%.
Transaction concluded in November
The transaction between Metro and Auchan was already concluded in November 2012 and included the acquisition of 91 hypermarkets in Poland, Russia, Romania and the Ukraine for 1.1 billion euro. This included exploitation as well as real estate.
Metro put its hypermarkets in these four countries on display, because it wants to focus on its cash & carry at Metro and Makro and on its electronics chains Media Markt and Saturn. Nonetheless the group will remain owner of Real locations in Germany and Turkey. In the 91 hypermarkets acquired by Auchan, Real had a sales figure of 2.6 billion euro. The French chain will be putting its own name on the stores.
