Biggest restaurant in the world
Ikea is the first foreign mono-brand retailer to gain the government's permission to invest directly in the country and has clear expansion plans for its new markets, having already bought four plots of land. The first location to open is Hyderabad's store in its IT district HITEC City, featuring the world's biggest Ikea restaurant with place for a thousand customers. 950 employees will accommodate an expected 7 million visitors per year in a store that - compliant with the Swedish chain's quest for sustainability - features solar panels, LED lighting, water treatment stations and modern waste management systems.
That quest may be worldwide, but the first Indian store does have some local accents: the product range and the store interior were suited to local tastes, echoing the results of a thousand visits to potential customers. Along with the Swedish classics, Indian customers will find masala boxes, idli pans and colourful textiles. Moreover, Ikea will feature a whole range of cheap products for the Indian market, costing less than 200 rupee (2.5 euro), and customers who are not familiar with Ikea's DIY concept will find affordable services like delivery and professional installation. The restaurant too will feature local specialties along with "the Swedish kitchen with an Indian touch".
