Featured 2013 record year for British sales of singles

The sales of singles in Great Britain are in an upward spiral. The Official Charts Company is even predicting 2013 to be the best year ever. Interestingly, 99.6 percent of all singles are sold digitally.

Thanks to Daft Punk and the digitalisation

Compared to the first six months of 2012 the sales of singles has risen by 2.5 percent to 188.6 million pounds (almost 220 million euro). Last year the sales already rose by 6%. “2013 looks set to become the biggest year for singles sales in British history”, according to the Official Charts Company, whose numbers are used to make the official British charts.

That excellent performance is mainly due to ‘Get Lucky’, the massively popular single of Daft Punk. It was released only ten weeks ago, but it has already sold more than one million copies. ‘Blurred Lines’ of Robin Thicke is on the number two spot with over 828,000 copies sold and ‘Thrift Shop’ of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis completes the podium with 680,000 copies.

99.6 percent of singles bought by the British were digital copies. Ever since the first legal download platform launched in 2004, iTunes, sales have been going up: in 2003 only 30 million singles were sold and now the target of 200 million does not seem that far off.
